Art is in the Air
PAINT THE TOWN Cranford Plein Air Event
On a late spring day you might expect to see artists painting their canvasses on the streets of Paris. This
June, Jersey Central Art Studios together with the Chamber of Commerce and the Cranford Downtown
Management Corporation will be bringing artists’ to Cranford’s sidewalks, parks, private gardens and
meandering river. For five days, June 9th through the 13th, over thirty juried professional artists from
New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Kansas, and even
Germany will be using Cranford’s historic architecture and natural beauty as their inspiration. This event
will allow the public to watch over the shoulders of nationally known painters as they bring outdoor scenes
to life on their canvasses.
Plein-Air is a French term for painting in the open air; done outdoors these paintings are usually done
quickly. The artist's intent is to capture the light and feeling of a particular time of day.
Information headquarters for this event will be located at Joanie’s Café in the heart of downtown Cranford
during the days of the event. A map there will provide daily updates of the artists’ locations, giving visitors
and the public the opportunity to find and see the painting processes firsthand.
In addition to the main PAINT THE TOWN plein air event, on Saturday June 12 all artists—competition as
well amateur—will be invited to register and compete in a “Quick Draw” competition. This is a two-hour
plein air contest to create the best outdoor painting in a short two hour timeframe. The Quick Draw will be
contained within a four block area of downtown creating excitement and allowing public observation and
interaction. Quick Draw art will be displayed downtown and will be judged, receive awards, and be put up
for sale to the public that afternoon.
On Sunday, June 13th, from 1pm to 5pm, the PAINT THE TOWN event will culminate with a Grand Finale
Show and Sale of the competition paintings. All the paintings that were created during the four-day event
will be displayed, judged and offered for sale to the public. The Show and Sale is open to everyone and the
public is encouraged to attend, enjoy, and purchase the art.
